Guest Blogger: Why I Stand with Planned Parenthood
As a longtime Planned Parenthood patient and advocate, I know from personal experience the essential and vital role it plays in our state. When I was denied an IUD at the age of 21 by my GYN because I was considered too young to choose my own birth control, I relied on Planned Parenthood to have my back.
It is a common criticism among the GOP that the ACA hinders our right to choose our own healthcare providers. But their attempt to block federal funding from Planned Parenthood deliberately undermines mine. I choose Planned Parenthood because they offer a safe, judgment-free environment where I can seek information and receive quality care. They also supported me when I was lacking health insurance.
Defunding Planned Parenthood harms the most vulnerable among us. Low-income women and men rely on PP to provide quality care that is affordable and comprehensive. From annual exams and cancer screenings to comprehensive sex education and counseling, poor and low-income families depend on the affordable care that Planned Parenthood provides.
To my local legislator, Jason Chaffetz, I challenge you to reach out to your local Planned Parenthood and educate yourself on the huge range of services they provide and the number of your constituents who rely on them daily.
