The right to reproductive freedom is under very real attack in Utah. We need the help of Planned Parenthood Ambassadors who are willing to speak up and join the fight.
As you may have heard, one of the ultra-conservative groups heading up this effort, Abortion Free Utah (AFU), is lobbying city and county governments to pass anti-choice resolutions. We need to counter these municipal-level efforts by making sure that city officials hear from more than just a small group of anti-reproductive rights extremists traveling around the state. Elected officials in your city need to hear from you about why you support the right of Utahns to access safe and legal abortions, and they need to hear from you now. With municipal elections just finished, it’s the perfect opportunity to connect with your newly-elected city officials.
We know that often the loudest voices in the room get the attention of elected officials, even if those loud voices only represent a tiny minority of the population. We’re looking for Utahns like you who will contact their mayor and/or city council member to set up a time to meet and speak about why you support reproductive freedom. Can you help us?
If you’re worried about the future of reproductive rights in Utah and are interested in speaking with your city and/or county leaders, please sign up using this google form to indicate your interest. Someone from our team will respond and help you with next steps.
● If you’ve never done this before, no problem! The public affairs team is happy to walk you through it and provide you with prep materials and whatever other support you need.
● If you’re nervous about knowing how to reach out to your elected officials, no worries! We have a short primer video on how to connect with local leaders that we’ll share once you fill out the google form.
As we’ve talked about before, Senator Dan McCay is preparing to run an all-out abortion ban during the 2020 Utah Legislative Session. AFU is pushing McCay to run the misguided bill and using municipal platforms as a place to build steam. We hear one of the women behind AFU may even be using their roadshow as a tool in her run for office in 2020.
We need your help to stop all of this foolishness. We need our elected officials to focus on the things that matter most and help Utahns live happy and healthy lives — things like clean air, expanding Medicaid, access to family planning, and a good education for our kids. We certainly do not need another anti-reproductive health representative up on Capitol Hill.
