Our Doors Are Open
As you may have heard, Planned Parenthood Association of Utah withdrew from the national Title X family planning program earlier this week, along with a large number of health care providers. We simply will not comply with the medically unethical “gag rule” that went into effect in June. Health and Human Services drew a line in the sand and informed Planned Parenthood that by August 19th we needed to change our protocols and discontinue the practice of staff talking with our Title X patients about safe and legal abortion as an option and making referrals for the care that they choose (a practice that has been a part of the program since its inception 50 years ago), or withdraw from the program. We will not let the Trump-Pence administration silence our providers. We will not be bullied or bribed into selling out our standard of care.
We will continue to give our patients the information that they need and want, including unbiased information about all of their options so that they can make the best decision for themselves.
The Trump administration has made it clear from the beginning that they would work to “defund” Planned Parenthood. They have not been successful in their varied attempts, and instead settled on gutting the Title X program. They have sacrificed low-income and uninsured patient’s access to medical care to score political points. We knew it was coming, but it doesn’t lessen the heartbreak as we watch the program unravel with the mass exodus of providers.
For the short term, we will rally and use emergency funds to continue to provide subsidized care to our patients for as long as possible. We continue to be hopeful that the courts will decide in our favor (remember that we sued the Trump-Pence administration when they issued the gag rule) and/or that Congress will pass the spending bill in the Senate that will protect Title X. Do you have 5 minutes today? Call Senators Lee and Romney, and ask them to protect Title X and that you support Planned Parenthood as the Title X provider in Utah.
