Reproductive Rights Under Attack in Utah and Across the Country
What a week! The anti-reproductive freedom groups are picking up steam as they attempt to roll back our rights one by one. We need your help with ending the madness. Now is the time to tell your members in Congress that you stand with Planned Parenthood and that you want abortion to remain a safe and legal option for Utahns.
Title X Update: On Thursday, a panel of conservative judges in the U.S. Ninth Circuit decided to lift the preliminary injunction that was in place to stop the Trump-Pence administration’s “gag rule”. As you may recall, the rules were put in place earlier this year, Planned Parenthood filed suit, and the judge granted an injunction while the legal case makes its way through the courts. Yesterday, that injunction was lifted and the gag rule went into effect. This means that to use Title X funds Planned Parenthood would have to agree to not talk openly with our patients about safe, legal abortion. That’s not going to happen. Planned Parenthood in Utah will not be censured by the Trump-Pence administration. We will continue our nearly 50-year practice of providing health care and information to our patients based on their health needs, period. Planned Parenthood is here to stay, and we will continue to provide reproductive health care to our 46,000 patients across the state. Title X funding is used to provide affordable birth control, cancer screenings, and preventive care to uninsured and underinsured community members to support them in leading their best life. There is nowhere else for our patients to go. Title X funds have NEVER been used to provide abortion services. With the ruling yesterday, we have stopped using our Title X funding to provide care (we are the sole direct grantee in Utah) to provide subsidized health care. We have planned for this possibility and will shift to using reserves and private donations to continue to provide services uninterrupted. Today, our clinics are open and operating as usual. Our attorneys have asked for emergency relief (the injunction to be restored), and we are hopeful that our Title X funding will be restored quickly.
Abortion Access Update: Did you catch the Abortion Free Rally at the Capitol on Wednesday? Planned Parenthood in Utah isn’t going anywhere. Our doors stay open. As our statement in response to the rally said, “We believe that politicians have no place in healthcare decisions, and that access to safe, legal abortion should be protected. To those who oppose abortion, we urge you to join us in making sure all Utahns have access to affordable healthcare, including contraception.”
Thank you to those that continue to stand with Planned Parenthood as we fight to protect reproductive freedoms in the Beehive and beyond.
