Take Action, Earn Beehive Patches
This week, there are two main issues we’re asking The Birds and The Beehive to take action on and create buzz around:
Issue #1: Medicaid Expansion in Utah
From Alliance for a Better Utah: “Earlier this year, our Legislature took a step toward…expanding Utah’s Medicaid program but didn’t quite make it all the way. Rather than following the lead of over thirty other states that have fully expanded their Medicaid programs, Utah lawmakers passed an expansion ‘with conditions’.”
Those conditions include work requirements and enrollment caps which would “unfairly limit otherwise eligible recipients from receiving healthcare”. The conditions, Alliance for a Better Utah continues, “are questionable [in] legality, and are an excuse to limit a program that our government can actually afford.”
Have 2 minutes? Add your thoughts about the discriminatory Medicaid conditions to this survey from Alliance for a Better Utah and they will pass your comments on to the federal Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
Some good news: Planned Parenthood joined Utah Decides Healthcare in collecting signatures to include full Medicaid expansion on November’s ballot. We achieved our goal and Medicaid expansion will, in fact, be on the ballot this year!
Have 5 minutes? Give meaningful voice to why Medicaid expansion is critical for 150,000 Utahns in the coverage gap by sharing your story about difficulties enrolling for health care or being denied/ineligible for Medicaid through this form from Utah Decides Healthcare. If you don’t have your own Medicaid story, pass the link on to friends and neighbors who would be willing to share their stories.
Issue #2: Title X Gag Rule
Last May, the Trump Administration announced its intent to institute a nationwide “gag rule” that would cut any health care provider who performs abortions or refers patients to clinics that provide abortion services out of Title X–federal family planning money. The loss of Title X funding would be devastating to many Utahns who rely on Planned Parenthood for preventative care (FYI: Title X funding never goes toward abortion services).
Have 2 minutes? Let Health and Human Services Secretary, Alex Azar, know you oppose Trump’s gag rule by leaving a public comment here.
Have 5 minutes? Help smash abortion stigma by reading + sharing real life abortion stories from the #ShoutYourAbortion campaign.
Have 10 minutes? Share your own abortion story. You can opt to remain anonymous, but lawmakers and the public need to see the diverse, beautiful faces of people who have had abortions–and those who are fighting to ensure access to safe and legal abortion remains accessible.
Here’s how to earn more Beehive patches, honey!
This Saturday, July 21 PP of Utah will have a booth at the SLC Downtown Farmers Market. Find us on the west side of Pioneer Park from 8am until 2pm to purchase a Birds and the Beehive T-shirt or tank top ($20) and snag one of our new Local Organic Utahn patches (just let us know you’re an Ambassador and you’ll get one for FREE).

We’re sponsoring and tabling at Pride Festivals all over the state–from Logan to St. George–and first up is Ogden on Saturday, August 4th.
Save the date for Saturday, September 8th. Planned Parenthood Action Council of Utah is hosting an all-day action Boot Camp in Salt Lake City. Ambassadors who attend the Boot Camp will get educated–and get excited!–about participating in local elections and electing candidates that will work to maintain reproductive freedom for all Utahns. All participants will earn a Beehive patch for attending. Stay tuned for details–including info on accessibility and participating in the Boot Camp while outside of SLC.
