Week Four of the 2018 Utah Legislative Session
We’re over the hump and more than halfway through the 2018 Legislative Session! Here’s what you can do to keep the momentum up on this downward slope:
Check in with the Governor
Our dear old friend, Gov. Gary Herbert, expressed his unease about the constitutionality of Lisonbee’s Down Syndrome Nondiscrimination Abortion Act with the press this week. We don’t blame him: Roe v. Wade is the law of the land and protects access to safe and legal abortion. In fact, an Ohio bill similar to H.B. 205 signed into law last year currently has that state in a lawsuit against ACLU Ohio and Planned Parenthood.
Call the Governor at 800-705-2464 today. Request a transfer to the constituent line and leave a message reminding him that abortion bans, like the one in H.B. 205, ARE in fact unconstitutional. Tell him you support his effort to work with the legislature to remove the abortion ban.
You can also write him to let him know he is right in not wanting to take on this unconstitutional ban.
Double down on your PP Involvement
For those Ambassadors ready to take the next step in engagement with our organization, applications for our first volunteer training of 2018 are now being accepted. PPAU volunteers are an essential cog in our local reproductive freedom machine–they help us strengthen community connections and sign up new Ambassadors by running outreach booths, they help free up our staff’s time and headspace by taking on data entry, button making, and other admin tasks, and they help us advocate for reproductive rights by phone banking, canvasing, and registering voters.
