Week Six of the 2018 Utah Legislative Session
International Women’s Day Twitterfest
Join Planned Parenthood Association of Utah and our allied community partners at the Capitol on March 8th to celebrate the last day of the 2018 Legislative Session and International Women’s Day! The Birds and The Beehive will be calling out lawmakers’ actions via a Twitter-fed, birdhouse loud speaker in the Rotunda from 4:00-5:30pm that day.
We will have Birds and the Beehive lapel pins for all and the first 50 attendees who sign up (or are already signed up) as Ambassadors will receive one of our sought-after Birds and the Beehive T-shirts!
Even if you can’t make it up to the Capitol for the event, you can still participate–starting NOW–by tweeting at your legislators and using the hashtag #birdsandthebeehive.
Need some ideas on what to tweet at them? We’ve got those too!
- Remind your Senator to vote no on the unconstitutional abortion ban in H.B. 205.
Rep. Lisonbee’s Down Syndrome Nondiscrimination Abortion Act passed favorably out the Senate Judiciary, Law Enforcement, and Criminal Justice Committee on Monday.
Now there is only one more vote–on the Senate floor–before this admitted “message” bill (listen to the audio of Monday’s proceedings here) hits the Governor’s desk. Tweet at your Senator and let them know that rather than using an estimated $2 million of your tax dollars on expensive litigation, you want them to use that money to send a message of acceptance–funding education around and resources for people with Down syndrome and their families.
We suggest sending them this editorial: Empower parents to make a choice to have a child with a disability – Kevin Posey, sibling of Nick who has autism.
- Let lawmakers know you want Medicaid expansion in Utah.
Thank Representative Ray Ward, Senator Brian Zehnder, and their co-sponsors (found on the right side of this page) for sponsoring H.B. 12 “Family Planning Services Amendments” that expands Medicaid to low-income families for family planning services. You can also call out (whether good or bad) the vote of your own House Rep and Senator by checking out their voting record on the bill.
Planned Parenthood Association of Utah has partnered with Utah Decides Healthcare to gather signatures of Utah residents and voters who want to see Medicaid expansion here in Utah. Ballot initiatives like this are under attack thanks to Rep. Brad Daw’s H.B. 471 “Initiative Amendments”. Tweet at your House Rep and let them know you want your voice heard.
- Tell you legislators (and the world) why you #standwithPP and with women.
